Mike Lowell has been injured for a long time. It looked like there would be a trade sending him to Texas, though it’s not clear what Boston would have gotten in exchange. But then Texas decided they wanted to do a physical first to make sure that they were getting the goods that they thought they were getting. Lowell had a sore thumb at that time and suddenly Texas discovered that he had a torn ligament in the thumb. As a result, we are reporting today that he’s having thumb surgery today as a member of the Boston Red Sox. But the question remains as to why the Red Sox didn’t actually know that his thumb was that injured, why they hadn’t checked into it. What an odd situation for the Red Sox, who are usually so professional and thorough.

The 2010 version of March Madness looks like it will be very different from last year’s edition. Last year, we saw North Carolina, Michigan State, Villanova and UConn go at it in the Final Four. But this year, these teams are closer to #10 in the rankings, with teams like Kansas and Texas ranking very high. In fact, Texas just won this week against North Carolina and Villanova by decent margins. When this year’s tournament commences, it’s going to be one of the most entertaining ones that we’ve seen in awhile. We might get to see teams in the Final Four that we haven’t seen in many years, if ever. Make sure to have March Madness tickets in-hand before a lot of fans arrive on the site to get theirs.

When Ben Roethlisberger is under pressure in the pocket, expect him to somehow get out and then make an amazing play. This has happened many times over his career and this has created a certain amount of the success that this team has had over the last few years. With him in the drivers’ seat, the team is able to create ridiculous wins out of nothing. However, their defense has given him a lot of opportunity to make Super Bowls and playoff wins happen. After all, the team has won two championships over the last few years. This year it isn’t going to happen. It’s not clear why, but that their division has become one of the strongest in the NFL this season. Expect them to compete hard with the Bengals and Ravens next year and hopefully get back to the playoffs.

Just yesterday Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry passed away as a result of injuries sustained from a fall off his pickup truck in an apparent domestic dispute. He was rushed to the hospital where he later passed away. He will be missed by the team, which had given him another chance a year or two ago after he had struggled to stay out of trouble and such. But after he got himself more disciplined on the field everything seemed to be going his way till he broke his arm a few weeks ago. He still had a big future but people are sad to see him gone. The team has some important games coming up as they try to hold their division. They know that the game is important, but paying respect for their fallen teammate will be high on their priorities as well.

The NFC East is fast becoming one of the toughest divisions in the league. Last night for awhile it looked like it would be possible to have a three-way tie for first place. The Cowboys had lost to the Chargers. But the big game was the night game when the Giants played against the Eagles. The Eagles played a solid game, though the Giants kept up well. But there were a few things that ended up causing the Giants to lose by 7 points in the end. There were the missed receptions by receiver Nicks. There was a lost fumble by Eli Manning. There was the punt return for a touchdown. Another fumble recovery for a touchdown. It was a rough night for the Giants, and the Eagles seemed to be able to create huge drives to effectively score whenever they needed to. The Eagles are now in sole control of the NFC East and are probably headed to the playoffs. We’ll see if they can make it to the Super Bowl and finally win one or not.

One of this weekend’s big storylines will be the Dallas Cowboys vs San Diego Chargers. A huge game for Dallas, whose playoff chances are hanging by a thread this season. The Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants are making their case for the NFC East title. Meanwhile, San Diego has gone on their usual second-half-of-the-season surge that might get the team back into the playoffs and win their division. It looked for a long time like Denver might be able to take off, possibly even going almost undefeated this year. But they’ve fallen off in the last few weeks. This game might determine a lot about how each of these teams will be moving forwards. Hopefully we’ll get to see an amazing game this weekend!

People who had tennis tickets this year had a great chance to see a bunch of fantastic players on the court. The year started out with both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal sidelined with major injuries. This kept the biggest names in the game out of major competitions for several months. Nadal’s knee kept nagging at him for many months and Federer’s back got well enough for him to play much of the second half of the year. He was stellar and won a couple of major championships. But what’s going to happen when these new younger players come in to full rotation. Djokovic, Davydenko, Andy Murray, Andy Roddick and others look like they’re ready to take on the mantle of world #1 player from Mr. Federer. It’s going to be a great year and the shifts that we will see will be extra exciting this year.

One of the most talked-about teams in the NFL these days has been the Chicago Bears. Over the season, they had to work hard to get themselves adjusted to the changes that came with new quarterback Jay Cutler. But unfortunately, there weren’t quite enough changes to get the job done and the team has been having major issues with their playbook. It appears that their offensive playbook relies too much on the run, which hasn’t been able to produce, and doesn’t give emphasis to passing, which hasn’t worked so well either. This is the year that’s going to hopefully be a turning point for the team. They are certainly hoping so, and fans are hoping that there will be some major organizational shakeups in the meantime, so that there aren’t coaches talking about how great this team is, even as they slip further under .500.
