When Tiger Woods got into a car accident the evening after Thanksgiving, he might have hoped that the story would be buried in the bad part of the news cycle. Unfortunately, instead of actually coming out with the story on Friday or Saturday, which might have put the whole thing to rest, the story has continued all the way into today and will be a force for most of the upcoming week. The problem isn’t so much the car accident. It’s that it happened at 2:30 am. It’s that his wife “rescued” him, by smashing the back window with a not-ironic golf club, and pulled him out that way, rather than opening the door and pulling him our (or going in, unlocking a door, and then pulling him out). It’s that there were rumors the two days previous that indicated that Woods might have had an affair recently. The story seems to have a life of its own and we’re of course going to keep following it. Hopefully it’s nothing more than an oops crash and some silliness.

The Texas Longhorns have been back on top of things again this year. We had been looking forward to the return of Colt McCoy to see if he would be able to lead his team all the way back into the bowls. Yesterday, they had a huge 49-39 win over Texas A&M that showed McCoy’s amazing strength in throwing 4 touchdowns and running in another touchdown. While we haven’t been able to ascertain whether this means that they will be able to get into the BCS Bowl, or whether he will win his Heisman. Some people think he’s a shoe-in, but others are convinced that no one seems to want it enough to give it to them. McCoy has had several amazing performances this year, so it looks to me like he will probably get it.

Two of our current era’s most challenged teams faced off on Sunday. Browns vs Lions wasn’t expected to be an exciting game at all, perhaps even a scramble to the bottom of the scoreboard. But it turned into an airshow like few others this weekend, which ended up in the scoring of more than 70 points combined. There was some odd stuff going on too, it would seem. First off, the last play for the Detroit Lions, when they were behind by 6 points, was the deep throw. There was defensive pass interference in the end zone as time expired, bringing the Lions practically to the goal line with no time remaining. While it looked like Matt Stafford might be injured, he came out to play that one last throw, which was successful, giving them the 38-37 win. Now, Mr. Mangini, the Browns coach, says that the Lions’ defensive players might have been faking injuries to slow down the no-huddle offense of Cleveland. Mangini seems to have a reason for every loss this year, but maybe he’s right? I’ll let you decide for yourselves!

In the NFC North, one of the big teams is the Minnesota Vikings. This year has been especially exciting for them, because Brett Favre is leading them far with only a loss or two under their belts so far. So it came as a bit of a surprise this week when the discussion up there became heated. Usually when a team is so dominant, it’s not nearly as big a deal when little conflicts come up. But their lease in the Metrodome will be running out at the end of next year. When they renew, they will, apparently, not get the good low rent deal that they have had for many years. And the team admin isn’t happy about it, saying that they should then get a new stadium from the city. The city doesn’t seem to keen on that, since they are already financing much of the Twins’ new stadium starting next season. This leaves the Vikings with the option to leave and head somewhere else, like Los Angeles, who don’t have a team at all. The Los Angeles Vikings. Sounds fitting, right?

Going into this weekend, it looked like the New Orleans Saints or Indianapolis Colts would finally lose a game in the 10th week of the season. But surprisingly, both of these teams stayed undefeated this year, with Indianapolis winning a stunning victory against New England. What wasn’t so surprising is that the Saints won against the Rams, though the 5 point margin of victory was much less than had been anticipated. Are these two teams on their way to getting each other in a Super Bowl in February? Since they don’t play each other in the regular season, it’s possible that they could both be undefeated all the way. Recent history suggests, however, that undefeated teams aren’t as good in the playoffs as they would be expected to be. Maybe they put too much into remaining undefeated at the end of the year and don’t give their best players enough rest.

It is coming. It will blow you away. It’s the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. It’s going to be one of the biggest sporting events of the year, with all your favorite characters from the 2006 games in Turin. But this time, there will be some new faces and some other things. These games will be full with 86 sports, including several versions of skiing and ice skating. Figure skating and speedskating. You will get to see bob sledding, curling, ski jumping and ice hockey. All in one grand city. Are you a fan of the American team? Or are you from another country, with an excitement to see your own home country competing on an international stage? It’s going to be one of those great events that makes you proud to be from your country, so get your 2010 Winter Olympics tickets today.

Chase Utley is now one of the best players in the MLB. There are only two teams playing in the MLB right now, but he is certainly one of the best. He has had an outstanding run in the postseason so far, with some of his best batting coming in last years and this years World Series. The Phillies owe a lot to this star and he has in fact got the highest number of postseason HRs for a second baseman in baseball history. But the Phillies are still in trouble. They trail 3-2 heading into Game 6 in New York. This is going to be an uphill battle for them, that’s for sure, since they need to take both of these games to win the series. It’s not necessarily true that they will lose, but they have a long way to go!
