Pirates Pillaging Coffers?

Posted on Sep 29, 2009 under Uncategorized | Comments are off

There are rumors flying around about the Pittsburgh Pirates that they have simply been taking the money that the team takes as a profit and simply adding it to their own bank accounts. Or rather, the team management is, according to the rumors. There isn’t anything to back this up, just the combination of the fact that the team has made a profit almost every year this decade, but the team just doesn’t get any better through the years. It’s a sad situation for the team and hopefully we will see them start to improve a bit. They have had 17 losing seasons in a row, the longest run of a pro sports team, including this year. Next year, they might be able to move forward; or else they’ll be stuck in reverse for awhile. But Bud Selig believes that the team will be getting better over the next few years.

Champions again?

When you have Celtics tickets in your hands, you will have a great chance to see a very powerful team in action. With their star players back off the injured list, they probably will have a good chance to get back to the playoffs and start knocking off opponents the way that they did two years ago. This year, because of those injuries, they were unable to get themselves past the second round. They played a heck of a series against the Chicago Bulls, however, where they had to play several games with multiple overtimes. But they held out against the younger, less experienced team. That’s what’s going to ultimately bring the Celtics through the wall: they have experience and they have talent. This is often the winning combination that will get a team back into the Finals. Get your tickets and make sure that you’re part of an historical season.

Patriots vs. Jets

With the Patriots supposed to be on the way to the Super Bowl or at least off to the post season, you would think that they will be able to take on their Divisional Foes a little bit more. The NY Jets will need to get themselves moving and their 16-9 win against the Patriots this Sunday should give them a major help in that direction. The Jets had been talking so tough throughout the summer, you had to know that they had some big game plan to take on the Pats. They used some big blitzing and some wacky defensive moves to hold the Patriots to simply 3 field goals. Nothing else. Good job Jets. How exciting!

More Surprises?

CNNSI is suggesting that there will be some more exciting surprises this weekend in NFL action. Let’s get ourselves ready for a fun weekend! One of the big surprises that might come up is the game between the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions. The Lions haven’t won a game since 2007, so it could be very exciting for us to see this game. With the Vikes in partial disarray, with some challenges for Favre getting used to the offensive system. The Lions didn’t look all that great last weekend, but they are still getting used to their record number of new players. Hopefully we’ll be able to see these teams in a really good game. I don’t even care who wins, but a good game is a definite possibility with these two!

Chargers Spoil Evening for Raiders

Although the Raiders played an outstanding game against the Chargers last night, they ended up with a loss at the end of the night. This is because Philip Rivers came into the 4th quarter, ready to show the team that he was able to lead his team all the way to victory. After all, this is why he would get the money that he does. He led the team down the stretch, capped off by a 5 yard run by Sproles with 18 seconds left in the game. This was preceded by a huge 50+ yards touchdown pass by JaMarcus Russell to give the Raiders the lead with under 2 minutes to play. These teams play frequently, but the Chargers just win all the time, more than a dozen in a row now.

College Ball

When you think of college basketball, you probably think about the rankings that are always happening. You might even think of your bracket or office pool to see who might be about to win bragging rights for awhile. Last year, everyone expected North Carolina to win, as they often do. They have a quality program with some strong players right on the way. On the other side, everyone else is working hard to defeat them in tournament play. The early rankings have North Carolina at the top, with Michigan State and UConn in 2nd and 3rd. When you’re looking for NCAA basketball tickets for this year, pick your favorite team and have a lot of fun seeing a great team in action.

Oops

Fernando Rodney got in trouble this week for a little display that he put forward after a 35-pitch save that he threw the other day. He got the save and did a good job. But then he apparently threw the ball into the stands. Was he upset? Was he angry? it’s hard to tell. But he threw the ball all the way up into the press box. But it sounds like he threw it too hard and perhaps simply overhand. Either way, he’s been suspended for three games. It’s not clear what that’s going to do to the team’s chances in the playoff race or anything else like that. Hopefully this is just a random isolated incident for him, and it looks like it will be. He says that he was just tossing the ball up to the stands, but the MLB didn’t believe him this time. The penalty will start immediately unless there’s an appeal. But my guess is that they will simply let the penalty go on instead of possibly causing it to affect the playoffs or anything.

NFL Time is Here!

I just wanted to spend some time talking up one of my favorite things in the sports world. Yes you can have your US Open tennis tournaments and all that kind of thing. On the other hand, the rest of us will be watching the NFL this year. What an exciting year it will be. We will get to watch Tom Brady playing once again. We will also get to see the Chicago Bears with their new QB Jay Cutler, trying to bring the team back to the NFC North title. But they will have to contend with Mr. Brett Favre. He is one of “My Favreorite Things”, although I’m not a Vikings fan. The western division on both sides are going to be much improved compared to the last several years. There are going to be some great competitions this year and you will be able to see some great fun this season!
