NHL Cup Set

Posted on May 29, 2009 under Uncategorized | Comments are off

The Stanley Cup Finals are set with a rematch of last year’s series. The Pittsburgh Penguins were not the favorite team to make it to the finals, but they have taken on the Capitals and the Hurricanes and beat them pretty decisively. The Caps were able to push the Penguins on forward to 7 games. But though the Hurricanes were supposed to jump forward and get the Penguins to more games than 5. But it didn’t pan out. The Red Wings were expected to get this far, but they were supposed to have some kind of challenge along the way. The Blackhawks could have been that challenge, but they weren’t able to push it forward as expected. Saturday is Game 1, so get ready for an entertaining series!

NBA Basketball

The Cavaliers may not know it, but they are in some serious trouble right now. They have fallen behind the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference finals, 2-1. They have to bring themselves back into the game. Part of the trouble that they’re having is that LeBron might be tiring out. He seems to be the biggest thing that the team has, and perhaps their only trick. It’s not much of a trick though, since everyone knows it’s going to happen. He’s going to take a long shot or rush towards the basket. He might well get fouled. And he’s going to score at least 35 points. The team really needs to find another direction to go. The Magic are, however, on a major roll since they took about the Celtics last series. Game 4 is tonight, so we’ll see if Orlando brings up a dominating lead or if Cleveland can win away.

Boxing Day

When Floyd Mayweather Jr and Juan Manuel Marquez jump into the boxing ring this summer, it will be a major battle. Mayweather hasn’t fought since December of 2007, when he knocked out Ricky Hatton. Previous to that, he had beaten Oscar De La Hoya in 12 rounds to become the World Champion again. He has been the world champion in 5 different divisions and hasn’t lost a match. You might’ve also seen him on Dancing with the Stars in the last couple years. Marquez is a little bit less accomplished, but no less tough. He has almost beaten one of the best in the sport, Manny Pacquiao, twice and is a five-time world champion. He has been training in Central Mexico, because he expects Mayweather to be at the top of his game in the coming battle. It should be a lot of fun to see them fight it out, so get cheap boxing tickets and you can be right in the action!

Favre

Lots of rumors are rising and falling around Brett Favre these days. He was in the talks with Minnesota Vikings and the media was acting like they’d signed a 10 year deal. But his agent came forward and said that in fact he wasn’t looking to come back at all. Then he released a statement saying that he was retired “at this time” and on and on it went. Some people are hoping that he returns to the league, but a lot of people are tired of hearing about it. Now he’s back in the news with a report that he was going to have surgery on his torn arm tendon. But then, since I started writing this entry, it was determined that he actually had no appointment to do so after all. So there is no clarity in the story and he’s going to keep us guessing for awhile yet.

Coyote Trouble

Posted on May 15, 2009 under Uncategorized | Comments are off

When the Phoenix Coyotes came into the world, people thought it was a strange idea. An NHL team in the middle of the desert? But the team has been a surprisingly effective one and is quite strong. But that doesn’t necessarily count for the business sides of things. The team has filed for bankruptcy and has apparently been under the wing of the NHL for the last 6 months or so. The holding company seems to be going under and there are prospective buyers to take over the team. This NHL team is struggling on this basis and we’ll have to keep an eye on the team to see who they are next year and how they get through this challenging time. But in some ways, it’s also unclear if they are going to stay in Arizona at all.

Cavs Keep Rolling

When the Cleveland Cavaliers came into the playoffs, they were the prohibitive favorite to win the Eastern Conference and possibly even the NBA Finals. The team has taken the first step forwards and will be in the Eastern Conference Finals very soon. They don’t yet know if they will be playing against the Celtics or the Magic in that round. It looks like they may be going to wait out a full 7 games before they know for sure. But most of the writers are already looking forward to the Finals, where they could play against the Lakers or one of several other teams. Then again, we shouldn’t count the Celtics or Magic out, because neither of these teams is to be trifled with, even if they are very tired after some long games!

Man-Ram

It was supposed to be so nice. The whole trade and improvement of a west coast team. Joe Torre trying to regain his reputation as a decent manager. A player starting off new after leaving one of baseball’s most successful teams. The Dodgers jumping back into contention. Suddenly, the wheels came off the wagon yesterday when it was announced that Manny Ramirez has been suspended from baseball for 50 games, having tested positive for a drug that was not approved by the MLB. He says that his doctor prescribed it for a medical reason and he didn’t realize it was not allowed. But many people are not pleased about it and not impressed with his candor. This is a problem that comes up again and again for a lot of the top players in the league. Hopefully he’ll be able to clean up but a lot of people think that he’ll be unable to regain his position as a respected player after this.

Wang

Chien Ming Wang had an awful start with the Yankees this season. He was a starting pitcher hoping to help the team compete for the AL East. But after 3 games, racking up an ERA of 32.50, he was taken out of the lineup, the team deciding that there might have actually been some kind of problem. It turns out that there are some issues involved with his lower body strength, which he probably lost while he was out during most of last season. So he’s out in one of the various training leagues, making his legs stronger and staying with lower pitch counts. It sounds like he’s happy to have a clear reason why he was pitching so poorly and a way to fix it up. He’ll be ready to go again in just a little while, it sounds like.

No Revenge Needed

I Want Revenge is still the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby tomorrow and it’s going to be an exciting race. Since one of the main horses that was supposed to be a contender, Quality Road, had a couple hoof cracks that were found last weekend, they decided that he should sit out and maybe compete a little later in the season. Instead, the impressive horse I Want Revenge, is ready to battle it out. He has 8 race starts and has never missed the board (first three positions), which includes 3 wins. Another possible favorite will be Pioneer of the Nile, who has won 5 of 8 and has improved markedly since he joined the Bob Baffert training team. It’s going to be an exciting race with 20 different horses looking to be the Triple Crown winner. Keep an eye on these two horses, but don’t forget the others!
