When you look at the college sports world, you can also look at women’s sports. We forget those sports a little bit too much, but it’s actually a very interesting league as well. Like in the men’s parts, Connecticut Huskies are doing very well, they are in the top part of the standings. In fact, the women are #1 in the nation. Oklahoma and Stanford are in the next two spots and it’s getting to be very exciting, because the season is coming to an end now. So what’s next? A few more weeks and then the real tournament begins. Stay tuned!

Horse Racing is coming up. In May we will get to see the Triple Crown start up again. There will be some exciting races this year, because there are a bunch of great horses that will be able to make a good case to win the triple crown this year. We haven’t seen a triple crown in more than 30 years, and it’s high time. But it’s one of the hardest championships in sports, because you could have the best horse, but if someone pins you down somewhere, it may be impossible to win. And the horses are very tired by that time, racing three long races over the course of about a month, plus travelling from Kentucky to Maryland to New York. It’s a rough time, but as a fan it’s nothing but exciting.

Tiger Woods is planning his return next week at the Accenture Match Play Championship. Reports are that he is having a bit of an adrenaline rush at the idea of returning to the game. He hasn’t competed in more than half a year and no one is really sure what to expect. In his last competition, the US Open, he won in an “overtime” period, even though he had a knee with ligament problems and two stress fractures in his leg. He has spent the intervening time recovering from that feeling. Now he’s back and we’ll have to see what’s going to happen. His short game has apparently improved greatly. And he says that he can hit all the shots that he needs to. So we’re all interested to see what will happen.

Alex Rodriguez has apologized to a Sports Illustrated writer. He had condemned the reporter last week for allegedly pursuing the issue of steroid use back in high school or at other times. He’s now on the defensive, having called up that reporter and apologizing for what he’d said, and the fact that he’d said it in the such a public way. A-Rod is in real hot water still, because he had a really tough couple of weeks. It started with the book by Joe Torre, his former coach, who revealed that he was being called A-Fraud in the locker room. Since then he’s admitted to taking performance enhancing drugs during the 2001-2003 seasons and he was one of the 104 players named awhile back. It’s going to be a rough year for him, I think.

Terrell Owens is one of the players that divides football fans more than most. The player is known as a high maintenance star, who can put up the numbers, but he can also take a toll on the locker room. He needs to be coddled a little bit. Taken care of, because he has a very easy to harm ego. At least, if we believe the reports, this is the kind of character he is, and it’s rather easy to imagine that he’s that kind of person, based on the way he acts on the field. Are the Cowboys going to keep him? Should they? It’s very difficult to see exactly what benefit they get from it. I mean, he puts up the numbers, but he also puts up a big struggle. Dallas may find a way to get rid of him in the offseason, since they are just having lots of trouble getting into the playoffs even with him on the team.

We talked about German soccer several months ago and so it seems like it’s time to jump back in and see what’s going on. Let’s take a look at what they call the Tabelle. At the top, still (!), is 1899 Hoffenheim, with 12 wins and 4 losses. Something has really gotten into this team this year. They were hardly on the radar screen last year, but here they are. It’s getting to be an exciting year and we kind of hope that Hoffenheim is able to hold of Bayern-Munich and Hertha, the perennial winners. It would be amazing if we got to see one of these kind of random-seeming teams win the season. Keep a close eye on this, because the games are starting up again.

The dog show world doesn’t get quite enough play on this particular blog. This will be remedied today! Next week, the Westminster Kennel Club dog show will happen at Madison Square Garden. It’s going to be a lot of fun. Usually, the winner of the terrier group wins the Best in Show, although a Beagle won last year and a spaniel won the year before. If you watch it on TV, you get to see the various bests in breed compete for the best in the different groups (working group, toy group, terriers, etc), and then at the end of the extravaganza you can see them compete for Best in Show. Where else do you get to see the model versions of certain kinds of dogs being shown to you in a clear way?

We had a very cool Super Bowl yesterday. I hope you caught it! It started out kind of bad, actually. Lots of mistakes and penalties. Just a kind of grinding game without anything really exciting going on. But then came the 4th quarter. Wow! Where did that come from? The Steelers were up by 10 or more as they went into the 4 quarter. But then suddenly, the Cardinals made a big scoring drive and got a safety from the Steelers. But then came the Steelers right back; they made a long drive in just a couple minutes and Santonio Holmes caught a pass from Roethlisberger in the endzone, just getting his toes in the endzone as he got pushed out of bounds.
