The Minnesota Vikings looked like they were going to have their hands full this weekend. Not only did they have a strong challenge coming up from the Chicago Bears and some big difficulties if they were to try to enter the playoffs in the Wild Card spot. They also had to play the defending champion New York Giants in Minnesota. New York has been one of the best teams this year, especially in the NFC. But on Sunday, it looked like New York had sewn it up late. But the Vikings kicked a long, 50-yard Field Goal as time expired to win the game 20-19. This catapulted the Vikings into the playoffs, having won the NFC North. The Giants had nothing to worry about, so I can’t blame them for not playing quite so hard. Enjoy the playoffs guys!

(Saturday Night, post practice team meeting. Ford Field locker rooms)
Coach Marinelli to his players: Ok boys. Great practice today. I saw a lot of good things. Some great dropped passes, poor coverage, Daunte: nice overthrown pass to Kevin Smith.
Dante: For you coach. All for you! (high fives from teammates)
Marinelli: Ok Ok, let’s get serious for a second. (A deafening silence ensues, and the camera view pans around to different players as coach speaks) It’s one thing to do this in practice, it’s another to do it in the game. I know I shouldn’t put any extra pressure on you but we have a chance to do something great here…to make history. And I don’t want to mess it up because of some dumb mistake. Keep yourselves focused. Running backs: run into the back of your blockers or go out of bounds before the first down. Receivers: remember what I told you…
Receivers (all together): Alligator hands!
Marinelli: Good, good. If we’re going to do this, we need a complete team effort. No more than 4 first downs, no less than 5 sacks. Get injured for chrissake!…Look, I don’t want to get emotional or angry with you guys. I just know what you’re capable of. You guys are terrible. Last year we lost focus in the early going and won six games…SIX! We PLAY as a team and we LOSE as a team. But if you’re not gonna do it for the Rodster here…there’s someone I want you to hear from (pulls out letter). His name is Benjamin. He’s been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and his lifelong dream is to see you guys go out there, give it 5%, and lose by at least 50…(tears well in his eyes) Now, if this sorta thing don’t get you guys motivated to fumble at least 4 times…then, maybe I’m in the wrong business. (wipes tears)
You guys…I love all of you guys. Circle around, circle around guys. You are the most pathetic team in history. Now let’s let the record show that. Hands in…0-16 on three. 1…2…3
All: 0-16!
Marinelli: Aright boys. Go home and get 3 hours of sleep.
(Scene fade black)

The Detoit Lions made NFL history this last weekend. They are the first team to go 0-15 in the history of the NFL. Oh man! They have had a rough year. They had hoped they could get a win this season. They have one more chance, but they don’t see that as a really likely possibility. At this point, they’re just really unhappy about the whole thing. The quote in the papers is “pathetic”. And that’s it. It is a rough year for them. It’s been a long decade for them. They’re going to really have to reconstruct the team this next year. Or else close the dome in Pontiac. Well, better luck next time.

It’s here! The BCS Bowl game schedule has been announced and there’s going to be some extremely competitive matchups. Florida and Oklahoma will meet in the BCS schedule, each with a heisman trophy winning quarterback leading the team. Penn State will face off against the USC Trojans, who will be going for their 7th straight Rose Bowl victory. There’s also many more incredibly exciting matchups that will take place. The Atlanta Falcons are having a surprisingly good year. Even without Michael Vick, the team has improved this year and may actually make the playoffs this year. It is getting better and better for them. They are one seed out of being in the playoffs this season. They have a 9-5 record, which is better than some of the other teams that are already in the playoffs. They are, however, in a close tie for wild card positions, as well as the divisional berth itself. They have a couple big games coming up, so we’ll have to keep an eye on them into the next few weeks.

It seems as though the Chicago Bulls finally have something going for them here. And by something I mean Derrick Rose. Sure they’re sitting in the number 8 spot for the playoffs right now and their record isn’t even .500, however, Rose has demonstrated to be an amazing asset to the roster. Not only can he make the big play or big shot, he is a powerfulteam player too. He’ll make smart choices and distribute the ball to whomever has the hot hand…like a good point guard should. With a solid point guard, the Bulls can now focus on the rest of the roster and may be a contender once more in the years to come.

Sorry first off, for writing about the NFL again. I just found the NFL power rankings from ESPN and it shows a league with some really good teams and some really struggling teams. The Tennessee Titans came in at #1 this week because of their good play the last few weeks. #2 is the New York Giants, which is unsurprising, even though they had a rough time against Philly last weekend. In 3rd are the Steelers, at 10-3 this year, and who have been a big below the radar screen this year. The Panthers and Colts round out the top five, Carolina having won an important game on Monday night and the Colts looking more like their old selves recently. Take a look at the whole rankings.

The Arizona Cardinals will have a tough time losing their division this year. They are at 7-5, and the second place team is at 4-8 (that is the hapless, helpless San Francisco 49ers). But they seem to be doing their best to fritter away their lead, having lost a couple of big games the last few weeks. Last Thursday, their Thanksgiving was ruined by the Philadelphia Eagles, who beat them 48-20. The Eagles were thus able to stop their losing streak, but they’re playing for honor, because their division is much too strong to win, with the 11-1 Giants at the top. Placed in the NFC West with the Cardinals, they would be 1/2 game back. Tough luck there. Some divisions are strong, some aren’t. So Arizona may go to the playoffs with a worse season record than the Eagles. Oh well.
