Today, we saw the result of the Wimbledon Semifinals for the women. And it was a bad day for Russia. Venus Williams took out Dinara Safina very quickly, in under an hour, to reach the Finals. Safina is the world number 1, but this might put that into some kind of jeopardy. Meanwhile, Serena Williams needed a longer match to win over Elena Dementieva, but she did it to also reach the Final. Venus is looking to become the first woman since Steffi Graf to win Wimbledon 3 years in a row. The Williams sisters themselves have 17 Grand Slam titles between them, which gives you an idea how strong they are. They will definitely have another one after the finals are played. The two Russians put forward a great effort in the tournament but it wasn’t quite good enough.

Mark DeRosa was traded from the Cleveland Indians over the weekend to the St. Louis Cardinals. This will surely come as a shock and a source of anger for the hordes of Chicago Cubs fans, who saw DeRosa traded after last season. We was strong for the Cubs last season and looked like he was going to do a good job with the Indians this year. He was really one of the few highlights on a greatly struggling Cleveland team. Instead, the Indians’ front office decided to cash him in early and send him over to St. Louis. He was put in batting cleanup after Albert Pujols. He didn’t get all that much done, but he’d been in town for a full 15 hours before the game, so it’ll take a little adjustment. We’ll see what happens with him in several upcoming Chicago series coming up soon!

Alonzo Mourning will be rejoining the Miami Heat this season, but in a new capacity. He’s going to be an executive for the team, leading to some interesting decisions, I imagine. I mean, just think of this guy, always so aggressive and occasionally kind of violent on the court. Just imagine him in a boardroom meeting. He could well fire anyone, just because he doesn’t like their face. It always seemed like he didn’t have his attitude completely under control. And what games will he be playing with the other executives? Will he be learning golf? Or maybe they’ll just play HORSE all the time. All kidding aside, it’s good to see him getting back into the basketball world. It seems to fit him well and he knows what it takes to win.

In the MLB, we have to be careful about the teams that could be powerhouses but haven’t hit their stride yet. The Chicago Cubs are one such team, whose offense hasn’t heated up this year. But the team has had quite a few injuries over the course of the season, and they will have to push themselves to get to the level they were expected to be at. Many people had the Cubs down as the obvious winner in the National League Central. But Aramis Ramirez is one of the biggest people on the offensive side for them, and he separated his shoulder in early May. He’s now working his way back and he might be able to return at the end of next week. Although, at that point, you could easily imagine that he’ll just stay out until right after the All Star break. Then he’ll have an extra amount of time to recover and then he’ll be able to get back into it and give the team some real power. The Cardinals and Reds should be watching carefully at the developments in Chicago.

Yao Ming has discounted rumors of an impending trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers as unknown. He’s been with the Houston Rockets since he entered the league in 2003. They haven’t won a championship in that time, but they have improved markedly and they made it deep into the playoffs this season, nearly beating the Lakers in the second round. But the news broke that a team of Chinese investors just put a lot of money into the Cavaliers, setting off a wave of speculation about whether the Cavs were looking to boost their full court by getting Yao on their team. It’s going to be exciting to see what happens, because the Cavs would be very hard to beat with him on their team. They need to get some other strong players, but it’s not clear exactly whom else they might choose.

There is a certain amount of pressure on the Pittsburgh Pirates this week. After the Steelers won the Super Bowl this January and the Penguins won the Stanley Cup, the Pirates will need to complete the championship china set in order to give Pittsburgh 3 of the 4 major league championships in 2009. It seems a little bit doubtful that the Pirates will get there, since they are stuck at second to last in the NL Central Division, at 3 games under .500. At the same time, they are only a few games separating them from the Brewers and Cardinals. This could be a big year for Pittsburgh and actually it already is. Surely the Pirates are feeling inspired by this, right?

Could this be the year? The Patriots have been hoping to make up for their botching of the undefeated season in 2007-8 for about a year and a half already. They didn’t even make it to the playoffs last year, when they lost Tom Brady to a leg injury for the whole season. Now he’s going to be back and they have a lot of the best players in the league amassed on their team. This will be one of the most entertaining years for these teams. This is going to be a fun year, particularly because we will be expecting them to be right back at their former glory! If you are ready to see them do so, see if they get back to the Super Bowl again, and possibly even win it all, get your Patriots football tickets, because the tickets go really fast for this team!

Although Kobe Bryant was upset at the end of last night’s Game 2, his team had won and put down Orlando 2-0. It took an overtime period to do it and they won almost in spite of Kobe rather than because of him. Bryant had a really off night, missing game winning shots and turning the ball over a bunch of times. But a win is a win. There’s no reason for a team to be upset by winning the game. It’s just Kobe who has high standards for himself. It revives the questions about whether Kobe is actually focused on winning the championship this season for the first time without Shaq. It would be a little unlikely to think that the Magic will be unable to win at least one game, but we shall see what happens.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are trailing just 2-1 right now in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals and it’s going to be an interesting time for everyone who is a fan of either of these teams. The Detroit Red Wings are clearly still the favorites, because they haven’t yet been badly challenged in the postseason. The other night, they got beat in the last period. But the Penguins are going to work very hard to keep these Red Wings in place and actually win the game. It’s still a fun series, and Detroit seems to have the upper hand, but Pittsburgh has been known to bring up some surprises this season. Plus they’ve dropped a bunch of other impressive teams, so we know they can do it.

Felix Magath, coach of Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga soccer, can smile for once. His team finally took the title for the first time ever. The team came close in the first half of the 2004-5 season, when they just bowled over all the competition. Last year, they almost were relegated to the 2nd league, but they were able to hold out and brought in Mr. Magath. He led the team to win out against Bayern Munich and it’s great to see another team winning for once. As usual, this will bring up a lot of grumbling down in Bavaria, where there will be drama and anger that they didn’t win. There will probably be personnel changes and all that kind of thing. But for now, Wolfsburg is the winner!
